The Monthly
November 2020 Edition
01
Letter from the Editor
For his final issue as Monthly Editor, Wilson Chapman writes about what the magazine taught him, both about being a writer and about being a human being, and what he’ll take away from his time at The Daily.
02
ORCS & DWARFS & THEATRE DORKS
Itching to try Dungeons & Dragons, but can’t find the perfect dungeon master for the occasion? Tabletale Games, founded by NU alum Alejandro Tey, is a company that offers free gamemasters to RPG campaigns, or lets you take part in a public free-for-all game to learn the basics of wizards and warriors.
03
FRIDAY NIGHT FLICKS
When the pandemic hit, Patrick Hughes Jr. was looking for ways to bring the Evanston community together and raise money for nonprofit Rotary International. The solution? Drive-in movie nights, where the community could gather, even while staying six feet apart.
04
SULLIVAN SPEAKS
If you had a crush on Shego from “Kim Possible” as a kid, then you’re familiar with the voice of Nicole Sullivan. The NU alum has had a varied career, from voicing iconic animated characters to appearing in beloved sitcoms such as “Black-ish.”
05
NEW SHOWS, SAME GUY
“New Girl’s” Nick Miller is famously from Chicago, but actor Jake Johnson is a suburban kid through and through; at the age of 15, he moved from Winnetka to Evanston, where he graduated from ETHS. He chatted with The Daily about his favorite spots in the city, and keeping his home close to him over the course of his career.
06
FROM FLOWERS TO ROSES
Medill alum Garin Flowers is used to giving interviews as a reporter, but not to receiving them. The Daily caught up with him to talk about his experiences as a contestant on the latest season of ABC’s “The Bachelorette.”
07
TV THERAPY
The pandemic has given many more free time to binge watch as much new TV as they please, but for Assistant Audio Editor Haley Fuller, it’s been a reason to keep rewatching the same three shows. In her essay, she explores how doing so has helped her deal with the stresses of 2020, and what it takes to help her start something new.
08
Open Tab
Most meat-lovers don’t give vegan spots a passing glance. But it’s worth introducing them to Spirit Elephant, a restaurant that serves impossible burgers, pad thai, and cauliflower wings to die for.
09
Reel Thoughts
The “Star Wars” sequel trilogy received a mixed reaction, but the fanbase has united around “The Mandalorian,” a critically acclaimed and universally beloved Disney+ series about a man and his Baby Yoda. In Reel Thoughts, reporter John Riker looks at the show’s second season and how it’s building on the solid foundation its initial outing set up.
10
Liner Notes
The pandemic has completely uprooted almost every entertainment industry, but music has managed to remain largely unscathed. In Liner Notes, Monthly Editor Wilson Chapman writes about the best albums that soundtracked his year, and the ones that’ll soundtrack the years to come.
